Workshop "Interlingual Encounters in a Transregional Perspective"

May 19-21, 2016

Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg

Workshop

Multilingual social and cultural environments regularly produce polyglot communication, bi-lingual or multilingual texts, translations and transcriptions as well as multifarious phenomena of language contact. This workshop is dedicated to systematic, implicitly or explicitly theorized approaches to “foreign” languages or linguistic matters in manuals, treatises, lists or other genres of texts and manuscripts. We invite to explore the frameworks and instruments employed, and to look into the potentials, as well as constraints, apparent in their perception and description of the languages concerned. As it seems, comparison or construction of equivalences was a common heuristic principle. The practical use and more generally intellectual and cultural impact and contexts of these interlingual encounters, as well as the social and historical contexts, into which they inscribe, are naturally part of the inquiry. We are particularly interested in synthesizing the experiences and endeavors of linguists outside of the Latin sphere and appreciate a comparative evaluation of their efforts.

The workshop is organized by the Orient-Institut Beirut in cooperation with the Seminar of Indo-European Philology of Halle University.
